India’s gas consumption saw a sudden and unexpected slump during the first five months of the financial year ending 31 March 2026, with consumption of 28.70bcm marking a decline of 7.89% compared with the same period in 2024–25. This represented the steepest decline since the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, when gas consumption plummeted. Barring the current rough patch, Indian gas consumption has remained steady in each of the last three years.
