More needs to be done to meet the government’s ambitious targets for gas
India’s gas consumption saw a sudden and unexpected slump during the first five months of the financial year ending 31 March 2026, with consumption of 28.70bcm marking a decline of 7.89% compared with the same period in 2024–25. This represented the steepest decline since the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, when gas consumption plummeted. Barring the current rough patch, Indian gas consumption has remained steady in each of the last three years. However, expansion of pipeline infrastructure, a ramp-up in domestic production and a more favourable policy environment are needed to meet the target of gas accounting for 15% of the energy mix by 2030 compared with 6% now.
