Crunch time for Mozambique’s LNG projects
This year will be critical to whether Mozambique can achieve its ambition of becoming a major LNG exporter by the middle of this decade
The deteriorating security situation in Mozambique’s gas-rich Cabo Delgado region and, to a lesser extent, disruption caused by Covid-19 have threatened to delay at least some of the country’s major LNG projects. These delays could affect the attractiveness—or even the viability—of those developments, as alternative sources of supply come onstream and the momentum of decarbonisation is expected to pick up pace. Nevertheless, many analysts remain bullish about Mozambique’s prospects of becoming a significant LNG exporter, even if potential delays expose developments to heightened international competition.
