Equinor’s NY deal ‘quantum leap forward’ for US wind
Equinor’s latest offshore wind power deal with New York state has been described as a momentous development for renewable energy production in the US
Equinor was selected by the state of New York to develop two large-scale offshore wind power facilities last week, the largest such deal by a US state. Empire Wind 2 will provide generation capacity of 1260MW, while Beacon Wind 1 will have a generation capacity of 1230MW. These are the second and third offshore wind projects agreed between Equinor and New York state. Equinor won the state’s first large-scale competitive offshore wind in 2019, the 816MW Empire Wind 1 facility. Equinor tells Transition Economist that the 3.3GW to be produced when all three offshore wind power facilities are in full production would be enough to power 1.8mn homes.
