Angola: short-cycle oil gains but gas travails?
The country’s government may have different upstream development priorities to IOCs, with particular impact on the gas sector
Angola is keen to build up its domestic gas and power sector, as well as to reverse recent oil production declines. But while oil remains the mainstay of the country’s upstream, domestic gas schemes may struggle to attract the investment available for large-scale African LNG export projects. Angolan energy regulator the ANPG has identified 51 opportunities “in development areas” to evaluate and drill by 2025, as it continues its efforts to revitalise the country’s upstream sector. The regulator says it is also promoting additional legal reforms to incentivise renewed exploration. Angola sees gas as part of its development agenda and is keen to increase domestic use.
