Every two years at the WPC Energy Congress, WPC Energy honours outstanding projects within the oil, gas and energy sector across various categories. This year the categories are: net zero initiatives, social responsibility, technological development and equal opportunities.

There are two winners in each category—one selected from national and international oil, gas and energy companies and one selected from small and medium sized companies.

Project entries to the net zero initiatives category will be evaluated on feasibility, scalability and financial viability amongst other criteria. Projects that help achieve net-zero emissions in supply chain operations or in renewable energy, carbon capture, hydrogen solutions, circular economy practices and energy efficiency will all be eligible.

Project entries to the social responsibility category will be evaluated on their cooperation with local communities and stakeholders, reproducibility within the energy sector and demonstrability of long-term results. The commitment and involvement of management and employees to the project will also be taken into account.

Entries to the technological development category will need to have clearly demonstrable and sustainable results, wide applicability for the oil, gas and energy industry and be cost-effective. Projects must demonstrate technological breakthroughs or innovative applications of existing technologies.

Project entries to the equal opportunities category will need to demonstrate one of the following achievements: implementation of policies that have measurably increased diversity, equity and access across an organisation, innovative use of technology to eliminate structural barriers to opportunity or tangible progress toward pay equity supported by data-driven approaches and proactive support for intersectionality. Judges are looking for scalability and replicability of initiatives and clear accountability frameworks to monitor, assess and improve outcomes.

In a parallel initiative, WPC Energy will also offer rewards to the best young authors from the Congress Technical Programme. These will be selected from the abstracts submitted by young professionals under 35.

The small company winner of the social responsibility category from 2023 was the Kilang Pertamina Internasional Refinery Unit III Plaju in Indonesia, which helped provide electricity and clean water to rural villages in South Sumatra. The large company winner of the same category was the Marun Petrochemical initiative which provided local social improvement programmes in Iran.

The small company winner of the technological category from 2023 was the Micro-Bac project, which used bacteria to enhance environmental and economic performance in Salt Water Disposal assets. The large company winner of the same category was Saudi Aramco’s Sensor Ball project, which pioneered the use of a device to autonomously collect data from oil and gas wells.

The large company winner of the equal opportunities category was Bahrain Petroleum Company’s Women of Tomorrow programme. The initiative enrolled female employees in its PlayBook development platform, where they received access to workshops and mentorship programmes.

The net zero initiatives category is new for this year.

The judging panel is independent of WPC Energy and is selected from a group of international stakeholders and industry experts. Multiple entries are accepted as long as each submission aligns with its respective criteria. Winners will be announced at the 25th WPC Energy Congress, taking place 26–30 April 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
