The second day of the 14th Dii Desert Energy Leadership Summit began with a heated discussion on the complex topics of carbon pricing and fossil fuel subsidies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), led by industry and policy experts exploring pathways to decarbonise.

Executive panels followed, examining emerging trade routes for hydrogen and its derivatives, which connect global energy importers with supply markets in MENA, Europe and Asia, crucial for achieving energy security and diversification. In addition, sessions on green energy transport and storage options focused on hydrogen carriers, comparing the costs and feasibility of various storage methods and long-distance transport solutions.

Other key discussions addressed the growth and challenges of sustainable aviation fuels, exploring how financing, regulation and partnerships can close the gap between project capital needs and viable business cases.

Panels also delved into the evolution of global carbon markets, with insights on mandatory emissions trading, voluntary schemes and the potential for a global trading system. A special session emphasised the rising role of liquid hydrogen as an energy vector, featuring insights from experts and a joint paper presentation on powering the energy transition.

The day wrapped up with interactive roundtable discussions on pivotal topics, including blockchain’s impact on the energy sector, storage solutions for both electrons and molecules, mechanisms supporting hydrogen production and transport, and the critical role of minerals in clean energy technologies.
