Turkey locks in more Azeri gas
New long-term deal is latest addition to country’s rapidly evolving supply portfolio as it eyes role as regional gas hub
Turkey has followed up a recent LNG buying spree with a new 15-year deal to take pipeline gas from Azerbaijan as its strategy for imports through 2030 enters a critical phase. The agreement, confirmed in early January by Turkish Minister of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar, is for 2.25bcm/yr from the Absheron field, supplied via the existing South Caucasus pipeline from 2029, according to Bayraktar. Absheron has up to now only supplied Azerbaijan’s domestic market from its first phase.
