India’s growing gas appetite
Demand increasing at a clip as government plots infrastructure buildout
India’s gas consumption has grown steadily at a rate of more than 7% in the first half of the 2023–24 financial year after a lacklustre showing in 2022–23, data released by the government’s Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell shows. With total consumption of 5.8bcm in September, India’s gas use marked its ninth consecutive month of growth with a 24% increase year-on-year. The surge was driven primarily by the power generation and refining sectors, with annual growth of 34% and 78%, respectively.
