Norway claims first smelter CCS pilot
Technology supplied by Aker Carbon Capture connected to ferroalloys production plant operated by Elkem in Rana, Norway
A consortium of 11 companies including major US aluminium producer Alcoa and Norwegian ferroalloys company Elkem have launched the world’s first pilot project to test CCS technology set up to capture emissions from a metals smelter. Trials of a mobile test unit supplied by Norway-based Aker Carbon Capture will start shortly after the technology was successfully connected to Elkem’s Rana ferrosilicon production complex. Other partners on the pilot project include industrial park operator Mo Industripark, Swedish limestone company SMA Mineral, Norwegian research company Sintef, Spanish steel firm Celsa Group, UK-based metal alloys producer Ferroglobe , Norwegian cement company Norcem, Norwegia
