Success for exploration licence
THE GOVERNMENT offered oil companies 88 licences, 53 of them new 'Promote' licences, under the country's 21st licensing round at the end of July. The offers were made to a total of 62 companies, of which 27 are new entrants to the UK North Sea. Strong interest in the 21st round - which was followed a week later by two out-of-round awards - allowed the authorities to claim a success for the new type of licence. Of the 35 offers of full licences, the most successful company was EnCana, with eight offers of operatorships - all for blocks to the west of the central North Sea's main producing area.
