Refining Report: American refiners target biofuels

Biofuels are leading the way in the US as the region looks to the future with renewable fuels

The US saw its first increase in domestic refining capacity in two years in 2023, with capacity now amounting to more than 18.5m b/d. Most refining projects in the region are focused on increasing biofuel/renewable fuel processing capacity (including renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel: SAF), while others focus on processing more domestically produced crude oil from US shale plays. Due to state and federal renewable fuel programmes and biomass-based diesel tax credits, many plant owners (e.g., Phillips 66, Marathon Petroleum, PBF Energy or Shell, Strategic Biofuels) are investing in increasing renewable diesel capacity in the US.
