The 24th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) Programme is formed of two main streams: the Technical Programme and the Strategic Programme.

Both streams will address the WPC’s theme “Energy Transition: The Path to Net Zero” in their own specific ways.

The Technical Programme will be broken down into four blocks, with each block consisting of a series of forums with various presentations on relevant topics.

Block One is “Transition in Exploration and Production”, Block Two is “Transition in Refining, Petrochemicals and Products”, Block Three is “Transition in Gas and Transportation” and Block Four is “Leadership Challenges in Transition”.

Each block is then broken down into a number of forums. Block One’s forums are:

• New supply sources to meet global energy demand
• Innovations for cleaner production
• Sustainable ways to maximise recovery
• Carbon capture and storage
• New technologies in geoscience

Block One will see presentations from, among others, Qatargas on liquid hydrogen production associated with natural gas production, the PetroChina Research Institute on deep shale gas in China, Karachaganak Petroleum on zero flaring solutions, Petronas on the sustainability of offshore legacy facilities and Aramco Americas on CCS coupled with en-hanced gas recovery for wet gas reservoirs.

Block Two’s forums are:

• CO₂ utilisation and removal in products and processes
• Emissions reduction and recycling in refining and petrochemicals facilities
• Cleaner fuels
• Innovation in products

Block Two will see presentations from, among others, the University of Qatar on decabonising natural gas processing plants, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation on converting carbon emissions to ethanol, Baker Hughes on a digital approach to reducing emissions and optimising maintenance, and the Indian Oil Corporation on hybridising strategies for green and blue hydrogen production in refineries.

“We must work together to make the necessary transition to a more pristine, sustainable and environmentally productive world,” said Abdullah Al-Osaimi, Manager for Corporate Planning at Kuwait’s Integrated Petroleum Industries Company, and one of Block 2’s forum chairs.

Block Three’s forums are:

• Smart infrastructure
• Innovations in LNG and floating in LNG for the energy transition
• Towards zero methane emissions
• Hydrogen—emerging use, generation and distribution networks

Smart infrastructure increases the scope of what is possible—David Hardie, Alberta Energy Regulator

Block Three will see presentations from, among others, China’s Southwest Petroleum Uni-versity on artificial intelligence models for short-term natural gas consumption forecasting, Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre on carbon-neutral LNG, PetroChina on optimisation and location of methane micro-emissions to gas stations, and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers on flaring and venting methane.

“Smart infrastructure increases the scope of what is possible. It is the operational evolution that delivers on the vision and mandate that is net zero,” said David Hardie, Director, Liability Management at the Alberta Energy Regulator and one of Block Three’s forum chairs.

Block Four’s forums are:

• Safety and risk management
• Cybersecurity
• Future skills for an evolving workforce in the energy transition
• Innovation and partnerships in supply chains

Block Four will see presentations from, among others, the American Petroleum Institute on the challenges of regulating cyber security in the oil and natural gas industry, Hatch Ltd on successfully transitioning the workforce to a cleaner future and Crowdhelix on ESG reporting developments.
