New standards in the US will bring big changes to the country’s vehicle fleet
Oil accounts for about 95% of all transport fuels consumed around the globe, or 26 million barrels a day (b/d) last year, and American vehicles hog the supply. More than half of all liquid fuels, or 13.45m b/d, were consumed in the US, accounting for about two-thirds of its appetite for crude, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). American motorists logged 3 trillion miles in 2012 – enough to make 14,000 return trips around the sun – and consumed more than 500m gallons a day of gasoline and diesel.
