Outlook 2022: A ‘just’ energy transition for Africa
The move towards a more sustainable energy mix must not penalise the continent
The world continues to transition away from an over-reliance on fossil fuels and towards a new energy supply mix, which will be much more reliant on a blend of renewable sources. While this process is accelerating, it is clear to many—but not all—that hydrocarbons will continue to play a very important, if declining, role in this evolving global energy mix for decades to come. This raises a number of critical questions that need to be asked. How do we prioritise where this future oil and gas production should come from? Who should benefit from the positive socioeconomic impact it generates? And what can the oil and gas industry do to minimise climate impact during this period of transition?
