Is Kazakhstan the unexpected bolter in the global oil industry for 2025? KazMunayGas (KMG), the nation’s oil and gas giant, is forging ahead with bold international partnerships to expand its global footprint and operational capabilities.
The close of 2024 was particularly dynamic, with a landmark agreement signed between KMG and Hungary’s MOL Group, alongside ongoing efforts to attract partners for major projects such as Berezovsky, Mugodzhar, Kigash and Kulsary.
KMG’s collaboration with Hungary’s MOL focuses on enhancing exploration and production, leveraging advanced technology to maximise yields from mature fields, and ensuring crude supply to European markets. This agreement builds on the success of the Rozhkovskoye field partnership with MOL and China’s state-controlled Sinopec, reaffirming KMG’s reputation as a global energy leader through innovation and strategic alliances.
Kazakhstan’s abundant energy resources have long made it a strategic player for international energy firms, with KMG at the helm of key partnerships. A significant collaboration with Chinese NOC CNPC underscores this, highlighted by the Kazakhstan–China oil pipeline—a cornerstone of the nation’s export strategy.
Expansion plans for the pipeline aim to meet China’s surging energy demand by 2025. Joint investments in natural gas processing further align with global trends towards cleaner energy solutions. Partnerships with Russia’s Lukoil, Chevron, TotalEnergies, and Italian IOC Eni continue to diversify KMG’s portfolio, spanning projects in the Caspian Sea, offshore developments, and sustainable energy initiatives such as green hydrogen and bioenergy.
Amid these ambitious undertakings, transparency remains crucial. The Milton Friedman Institute has raised important questions regarding tender processes for projects such as Kigash, Kulsary and Berezovsky. Issues around supplier selection and partnership details underscore the need for open and accountable practices as Kazakhstan solidifies its position as a global energy leader. While some outcomes have been disclosed—such as Astana-incorporated Pro Explore Mining Company securing Kigash, China’s Zhonghengyongsheng Energy winning Kulsary, and Chevron and Lukoil developing Berezovsky—clearer communication is essential for fostering confidence in Kazakhstan’s energy ambitions.
Beyond its established partners, KMG is strengthening ties with the Middle East, exploring refining and petrochemical ventures with UAE state-controlled ADNOC and renewable energy projects with ACWA Power. These collaborations underscore KMG’s focus on diversification and sustainability, key pillars in addressing the energy transition’s challenges.
Through strategic alliances, cutting-edge technologies, and a commitment to sustainability, KMG is positioning itself at the forefront of the global energy market. As Kazakhstan leverages its vast resources and innovative partnerships, the nation’s role in the evolving energy landscape deserves close attention in 2025.
