Nation at significant risk of not meeting its fifth and sixth carbon budgets, says climate watchdog
The UK must do more if it is to remain on track to achieve its emissions reduction goals, according to independent watchdog the Climate Change Committee (CCC). The UK is one of the few countries with emissions targets in line with the long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement. The nation has a target of reaching net zero by 2050 and an interim goal of cutting emissions by 78pc by 2035 compared with 1990 levels—targets that are enshrined in law. To achieve these targets, the government has laid out a series of carbon budgets that cap emissions over certain periods. The CCC produces an annual report on the government’s progress against meeting the targets laid out in the budgets.
