EU pushes for 45pc renewables by 2030
European Commission seeks faster deployment of renewables as part of new €210bn plan to cut dependence on Russian energy imports
The European Commission is proposing to ramp up its 2030 target for renewables in the EU’s energy mix to 45pc from 40pc as part of its RepowerEU plan to end the bloc’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels in response to the war in Ukraine. The revised target would lift the EU’s renewable energy generation capacity to 1.24TW by 2030, up from 1.07TW envisaged under the existing ‘Fit for 55’ climate package, according to new proposals that flesh out the RepowerEU plan set out in March. “A massive scaling-up and speeding-up of renewable energy in power generation, industry, buildings and transport will accelerate our independence, give a boost to the green transition and reduce prices over time,”
