Norway claims world lead in commercial CO₂ transport and storage as project developed by TotalEnergies, Shell and Equinor stands ready to start injections in 2025
Northern Lights, the world’s first commercial CO₂ transport and permanent storage project, is on track to start injections in 2025, following the completion of its receiving and storage facilities. The offshore project, sited on the Norwegian continental shelf, has a storage capacity of 1.5mt/yr and is fully booked by customers in Norway and Continental Europe, according to French energy company TotalEnergies, which has developed Northern Lights together with oil major Shell and Norwegian state-owned energy firm Equinor. “This is a proud moment not just for Northern Lights as a company, but for Norway and for the advancement of CCS worldwide”, said Terje Aasland, Norwegian energy minister.
