EU sets sights on pan-European CCS network
European Commission earmarks cross-border projects for funding and fast-tracks carbon management strategy as pressure grows to kickstart CCS sector
The European Commission has earmarked 14 cross-border CCS projects to potentially receive EU funding and preferential treatment in the permitting process as it steps up efforts to accelerate deployment of the technology as part of its decarbonisation strategy. It has also fast-tracked the development of an industrial carbon management strategy, which it expects to publish in early 2024, energy commissioner Kadri Simson told a recent CCS forum in Denmark. “The development of a CO₂ infrastructure network—from the North Sea to the Mediterranean to the Baltics—is becoming a European priority,” she said. “There is strong political support for CCS within the EU.” Simson highlighted the recent FID
