Huge ramp-up in CCUS capacity needed – ETC
Scale-up needed from 37mn t/yr of capture currently to at least 7gt CO₂/yr by 2050, says Energy Transitions Commission
The world will likely need to capture and either store or use at least 7gt CO₂/yr by 2050 to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, according to a report by thinktank the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC). This will require a rapid scale-up from the 37mn t/yr of carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) operating today. Achieving this growth will require high levels of political and financial commitment following a decade in which the number of operating plants has grown very slowly and many announced projects have been mothballed or abandoned. Projects already under development, if fully implemented, will achieve only 160mn t/yr of CCUS by 2030. “We will need engineered CO₂ r
