Chinese state-owned major Sinopec is close to completing China’s first megaton-class carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) project, but the country remains far from the large-scale development needed to meet its net-zero goals. Sinopec, Asia’s largest refiner, will soon commence operations at the project, located in the mature Shengli oilfield in the eastern province of Shandong, company chairman Ma Yongsheng told state media this week. The facility will be able to sequester 1mn t/yr of CO₂. Sinopec’s Qilu refinery will capture high-concentration CO₂, which will then be transported 80km to the Shengli oilfield and injected 3,000-4,000m underground for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Th
