Current commitments to the Paris Agreement will only limit the global average temperature rise to 2.2-2.4°C this century, according to the latest scenario from TotalEnergies. The Paris Agreement’s goal is to limit global warming to “well below 2°C, and preferably 1.5°C”, but nations’ contributions to the deal are voluntary and so far lack the ambition to reach that goal. TotalEnergies’ new ‘Momentum’ scenario incorporates 2050 net zero pledges from the US, Japan and South Korea, as well as a more stringent EU policy framework and China’s net zero goal for 2060.
